Two ancient systems, one name

Pythagorean (Western)

Attributed to Pythagoras (~570 BC). Letters are assigned values 1–9 in alphabetical sequence. The most widely used system for name and birth-path readings today.

Chaldean (Babylonian)

Originated in ancient Babylon. Values 1–8 are assigned based on each letter's vibrational energy. The number 9 is considered sacred and not assigned to any letter.

Digit Reduction

After summing all letter values, the total is reduced to a single core digit by repeatedly adding its digits until one number remains. This is your numerology number.

Frequently asked questions

The Pythagorean system assigns letters sequentially (A=1, B=2 … cycling back to 1 after 9), while the Chaldean system uses a non-sequential energy-based mapping where no letter is assigned the sacred number 9.

Numerologists debate this endlessly. The Chaldean system is considered older and more spiritually nuanced; the Pythagorean system is more popular in the West. Many practitioners use both and look for where the two results agree.

Traditional numerology uses the full birth name (as on your birth certificate). You can also try each part separately — first, middle, last — for a more detailed reading. Married or changed names are used to understand your present-day energy.
